Coventry Market’s Celebration day on 28th July was full of good old fashioned family ‘fun’. Britain’s Favourite market pulled out all the stops, and delivered a potpourri of attractions and events all aimed to please children and adults alike, kicking off the summer holidays in style. The event was officially opened by Linda Bigham, Cabinet Member for City Development, with the national “Making Market Matters Road Show” launching the initial celebrations with Master Chef Geoff Tookey cooking up some exciting meals in Coventry Precinct. Back in the market, crowds loved the rather spooky living statue who seemed to turn up everywhere. The stilt walking clown swept through the market revellers, leaving a chaotic wake of hilarity wherever he went (proving that Coventry Market truly is a place of histerical interest). The exotic animal zoo included snakes, lizards and tarantula spiders, some wanted to touch them others looked away in horror, but everyone was truly fascinated by these wonderful creatures. Speaking of which the talking dog on a tricycle was a children’s favourite, amusing the crowds with his friendly patter, and his constant trips past the butchers stall! The fun continued with the likes of Scalextric racing, face painting, lots of giveaways, plus a chance to guess the combination of the market safe worth £500. Needless to say this proved very popular, and queues for the ‘spin it to win it’ wheel, never stopped. Cllr Linda Bigham said: "A special thank you to all the traders, staff and everyone that came along to the Funday. It was a great day and everyone enjoyed themselves." No wonder Coventry Market is Britain’s Favourite market, it knows how to party, and judging by the all the votes it was receiving on the day for the Godiva Awards for Best Visitors Attraction, it may not be long before it’s celebrating yet another award, fingers crossed.
